There are several factors that contribute to the scarcity of long-term contracts in the SREC markets. Due to the complexity of these contracts, electricity suppliers will not enter into arrangements directly with residential and small commercial solar facilities under 2500 kW. For larger facilities, credit requirements and onerous terms will often get in the way. Finally, competitive electricity suppliers are averse to SREC contracts that outlast their electricity short-term supply contracts which often are fewer than 3 years in length.
As a result, most solar facilities will need to turn to 3rd party capital providers to secure long-term SREC contracts. These 3rd parties will fill a gap in the market by aggregating small facilities and using their size and capital resources to contract directly with electricity suppliers. SRECTrade provides a platform for Fixed-Price SREC contracts of all sizes.
Contracts will vary in length, but typically range from 3-7 years. Prices are set at a fixed price for the length of the term. All payments are made to the solar owner within 60 days of creation/delivery of each SREC.
